Melanie Lang

Dr Melanie Lang is a former elite youth swimmer and swimming teacher and coach with a passion for ensuring children and young people are protected and empowered while playing sport. In her professional life, Melanie is Assistant Director of the Centre for Child Protection and Safeguarding in Sport (CPSS) in the Department of Social Sciences at Edge Hill University. Her research and teaching focus on the policy and practice of safeguarding and child protection, athlete welfare, gender-based violence, and children’s rights in sport and physical activity settings, and she is well-known nationally and internationally in these areas, having worked with many sports and safeguarding organisations on improving welfare provision in sport. Melanie is a member of the Pool of European Experts on Sexual Violence in Sport and editor of three books on welfare issues in sport: The Routledge Handbook of Athlete Welfare (Routledge, 2021), Safeguarding, Child Protection and Abuse in Sport: International Perspectives in Research, Policy and Practice (Routledge, 2015), and Bullying and the Abuse of Power (Inter-Disciplinary Press, 2010).
