Directors

Marilyn Hawes

Founder and CEO of Freedom From Abuse Marilyn Hawes is a former music teacher whose three sons were sexually groomed and assaulted by their head teacher, a close family friend. All of her children have successful careers which confirms the fact “Abuse does not have to be a life sentence”.

Roger Woods

Roger is Marilyn Hawes’ husband and was around Marilyn and her family when the abuser of her boys was active having groomed Marilyn. Roger was well qualified to help the family having himself experienced child abuse from eight to twelve years.  Strange though it seems the abuse scenario drew the new family together as they all worked to address the impact of abuse.

Adam Satterthwaite

Adam has a long career in marketing with specialisations in both IT and photography.  He joined us back in 2012 when we were Enough Abuse UK and has played a key part in our development and change into Freedom from Abuse. His most visible work is the filming and production of “Grooming: the preamble to abuse” a video about how to identify abusers from their behaviours.

Learn more about our campaign

If you have a question that isn’t covered below, please contact our team here.

You can get involved in lobbying politicians, building pressure for change locally and helping to educate society on how to recognise abuse.

You can volunteer if you’ve used our services before, and if you have experience of abuse. The important thing is that you’re self-aware and able to help.

All of our volunteers have to undergo a recruitment and training process in all roles, and our volunteering is not something you can start immediately.

Not at all, donations are discretionary. What we really need is your time, effort and energy to help fight abuse.

Yes! Abuse isn’t just exclusive to the UK. If you live overseas there will be roles or tasks specifically for you to tackle.

Yes. We believe you should never be out of pocket as a result of volunteering with us. We will reimburse reasonable travel and other out of pocket expenses

“After seeing Marilyn speak I knew I had to answer the call to arms against abuse! It's humbling and rewarding to be able to help in some small way by being there for people who need us.”
