Services for schools

In addition to our training courses, we offer a full range of services to help schools and other organisations both prevent abuse and deal with the consequences of abuse.

“The training sessions were so outstanding, we’ve since worked with Marilyn and her team on how we can embed her advice in everything we do. The work they have done has been invaluable in helping us address every aspect of abuse”

John Maplin, Headmaster

When you want to really protect

Beyond compliance. From policy to protection.

By law, every school needs to comply with government guidelines on preventing abuse. But too often this results in a policy, rather than an active programme to prevent and manage abuse.

We’ll start by understanding your current approach, programmes and outcomes. We’ll then work with you to move you beyond mere compliance to create an environment that offers real protection against abuse.

Is your school at risk?

Audits & Risk Assessments

The secret to actively preventing abuse is a clear-eyed understanding of how well you do today. Many schools are confident they do it well, right up until they have a problem they should have been able to prevent.

We’ll help you understand your current level of resilience to abuse, and any risks you face. In most cases, an immediate action plan is required. We’ll help you implement and build a culture that delivers real protection for both the child and the school.

Have you got a problem to resolve?

Crisis management and problem solving

How you handle reports or suspicion of abuse is critical. Time after time, schools make key mistakes in their early response.

We’ve experience of handling almost every type of problem schools encounter. If you have a problem, or a suspicion of a problem, we’ll help you manage it to deliver the best outcomes.

Giving concerns a voice

Whistleblower management

Whenever we encounter abuse, we invariably find at least one person – teacher, parent or child – had suspicions, but didn’t feel comfortable accusing someone.

Our Whistleblower service allows those with concerns to contact us directly in confidence. We’ll ensure those concerns are dealt with and, where appropriate, without disclosing the whistleblower’s identity.

A tried and tested approach

Read the stories of those we’ve helped.

Marilyn led a spellbinding presentation where the pupils where engaged from the outset. Her delivery, ability to capture imagination and engage the pupils is fantastic. I cannot recommend her highly enough. This is the second time we have used Marilyn from Freedom From Abuse UK to deliver training.
Jonny Spowart, Heath Mount Prep School
Marilyn is clear from the start of her talks that her approach is hard-hitting, blunt and to the point and she speaks with great passion, energy and emotion. Our staff found Marilyn’s personal experiences on the subject of safeguarding to be affecting and thought-provoking, taking many out of their comfort zones.
David Boyd, Latymer School
There is no doubt that Marilyn Hawes made quite an impact, as I expected she would do, and the consequent level of discussion and debate was considerable that day and in the days following.  She raised quite a few issues for us all to think about, many of which are not comfortable, and yet that is exactly what we needed from an external speaker.
Peter Bieneman, Harrow School
Marilyn packed real punch and creditability, as an ex teacher and mother of abused children. Marilyn speaks in very clear and plain English, spelling out not only the dangers and the effects of abuse but offers an informed insight into how abusers operate. Marilyn delivered three hours of the most useful training experience I could ever provide my team.
